Minecraft Llama Taming: How to Win Them Over

Minecraft Llama Taming: How to Win Them Over

Published May 25, 2026 · Updated May 25, 2026

You can tame a Llama in Minecraft by climbing on its back over and over until hearts appear. You can do this by approaching a Llama and using your action button: right-click on PC, LT on Xbox, or L2 on PS5, depending on your Minecraft controls.

When you first mount a Llama to tame it, you may get kicked off first. You should keep getting back on, and after a few attempts, you’ll see heart icons on the Llama’s head. This indicates that the Llama is now tamed. Feeding Llamas certain food items will also speed up the taming process.

In this guide, we’ll explain where Llamas live in Minecraft, how to make taming faster, and how to breed better Llamas with more storage space.

Where to Find Llamas in Minecraft

You can find Minecraft Llamas in savanna plateaus, windswept hills, and windswept forests. They spawn in groups of four to six. When you spot one herd, you can tame multiple Llamas in the same area. If you’re on the Bedrock edition, you can also find Llamas in regular savanna biomes and windswept savanna biomes.

Wandering Traders always have two Llamas with them. These Trader Llamas wear blue rugs and follow the trader. If you eliminate the trader, the Llamas become wild again, and you can tame them. If you take too much time or move around before taming these Llamas, they might despawn. This is not a concern in the Bedrock edition since the said Llamas actually become tamed automatically once they lose their leader.

What Food to Use for Llama Taming in Minecraft

You can speed up the taming process for Llamas in Minecraft by feeding them Wheat or Hay Bales. You don’t have to do any feeding to be able to tame Llamas, but Food reduces how many times the Llama bucks you off, so you get to tame them faster.

Llamas have an internal number that starts at zero, called Temper. This number decides whether your next mounting attempt will work.

  • The number increases by 5 every time you try to mount and fail.
  • The number increases by 3 when you feed Wheat to a Llama.
  • The number goes up by six when you feed the Llama a Hay Bale.

The higher the Llamas’ Temper number gets, the more likely your next attempt succeeds.

We recommend feeding Llamas ten pieces of Wheat before mounting them. This raises their Temper enough to a point where you should be able to tame them within three to five tries.

Feeding Llamas before taming them comes in clutch when you’re trying to tame a few of them in a row. While wanting to save resources might be tempting, no one wants to spend more than a few minutes taming a couple of Llamas, who can be quite stubborn, like Donkeys.

How to Equip Chests and Carpets on Llamas

To equip a Chest on a Llama in Minecraft, hold the Chest in your hand and right-click the tamed Llama. The Chest provides between 3 and 15 inventory slots, depending on the Llama’s Strength stat, which ranges from 1 to 5.

Carpets attach the same way. Hold a Carpet in your hand and right-click on a tamed Llama to equip it with the Carpet. Each Carpet colour produces a distinct design on the animal’s back. This looks like a cosmetic feature at first, but it helps players to colour-code their Llamas by cargo type while managing caravans.

Llama caravans are the perfect way to move large numbers of items in SMP and Vanilla Minecraft servers. There are plenty of these servers and even more for other gamemodes like Survival and SkyBlock on MineRank, so you can start your own adventure and see how useful Llamas can be on your own as well.

Best Ways to Lead a Llama Caravan

The best way to lead a Llama caravan is by simply attaching a lead to one of the Llamas. The nine nearby Llamas will automatically form a caravan behind it. You can leash multiple Llamas separately, with each leashed animal leading its own group of nine followers.

Caravans especially come in handy when you’re moving to a new base. You can load each Llama with materials, leash the leaders, and make a single trip instead of shuttling back and forth for hours.

How Do You Breed Tamed Llamas in Minecraft?

You can breed Llamas by feeding Hay Bales to two tamed adults in Minecraft. Each parent needs one Hay Bale, and they make a baby Llama after you feed them.

The baby Llama’s strength comes from its parents’ stats. Strength matters because it controls how many items the Llama can carry. You can check a Llama’s strength by putting a Chest on it, counting the slots, and dividing by 3.

We recommend keeping your strongest Llamas in a separate place so you can breed them together, allowing you to form caravans with the highest capacity in the future.
