How to Tame Ocelots in Minecraft and Win Their Trust

Published June 29, 2026 · Updated June 29, 2026

To tame an Ocelot in Minecraft, you need to earn its trust by feeding it Raw Cod or Raw Salmon. You cannot technically tame Ocelots, like you’d tame a Horse, but they won’t despawn or run away from you after establishing trust.

If you have Raw Cod or Raw Salmon in your inventory, you can hold them out near an Ocelot, and let it come to you. When the Ocelot arrives, feed it the fish, and hearts appear on their head shortly, to show that you’ve won them over.

Ocelots no longer turn into domestic Cats in Minecraft. That changed back in Java Edition 1.14. Today, they stay wild in appearance but still become companions. They also received updated textures over the years, and here’s everything you need to know about them.

Where to Find Ocelots in Minecraft

Ocelots mainly spawn in Jungle Biomes of Minecraft. They generate on top of grass blocks at or above sea level (Y-level 63). That means, you can more commonly find them in open jungle areas.

One warning we can give is that Ocelots spawn as hostile mobs on the Java Edition, so they won’t show up on Peaceful difficulty. On Bedrock, Ocelots are passive mobs, and they spawn in all jungle biomes in that version.

How to Breed Ocelots in Minecraft and Grow an Ocelot Family

You need two Ocelots that trust you in Minecraft to breed them. Feed each of them Raw Cod or Raw Salmon and they’ll enter love mode. A Kitten should arrive right after. There’s a five-minute cooldown before Ocelots can breed again.

The best part about kittens on the Bedrock Edition is that they’re born already trusting you, so there’s no need to go through the whole feeding process again. You can speed up a kitten’s growth by feeding it fish. Each fish shaves 10% off their growth time.

On a side note, Ocelots got a fresh new look as part of the Tiny Takeover update in 2026.

How to Win an Ocelot’s Trust

You must feed an Ocelot Raw Cod or Raw Salmon to win its trust. When you spot an Ocelot, switch to your Raw Fish and approach them slowly. Once you’re within about ten blocks, the Ocelot should start moving toward you on its own.

From that point:

Recommended server to play in
  • Don’t move
  • Don’t turn your camera too fast
  • Don’t put the fish away.

Any sudden movement within six blocks will spook Ocelots. It should close the distance on its own as you stand still. Once the Ocelot is right in front of you, feed it the fish. Keep feeding until pink hearts appear above its head.

When you see hearts over an Ocelot’s head, that will be your sign that it now trusts you. Each fish has a 33% chance of working, so it may take you a few of them before getting to the hearts.

Gear Up with Fishing

Since you’ll need more than a few raw fish to tame an Ocelot, you should stock up on Raw Cod and Raw Salmon by fishing.

If you don’t want to spend too much time fishing, enchant your fishing rod with Lure, so you can load up on fish quickly before making your way into the jungle.

How Trusted Ocelots Compare to Tamed Cats

Ocelots and Cats in Minecraft share some traits, but they also behave quite differently as well.

If you want a companion that follows you around, a tamed cat is the better pick. But if you’re after something more low-maintenance with solid passive utility, an Ocelot holds its own.

Practical Ways to Use Ocelots at Your Base

Trusted Ocelots in Minecraft are quite useful as they can scare off Creepers, and even Phantoms on the Bedrock edition.

Creepers won’t go near Ocelots both on Java and Bedrock Minecraft. They keep at least six blocks of distance at all times. On Bedrock, Phantoms also stay away from Ocelots. If you’ve been skipping sleep and Phantoms are becoming a problem, an Ocelot nearby can help.

Most players on FactionsSkyBlock, and SMP servers make use of Ocelots. There’s plenty of these servers on MineRank and you may find a use for Ocelots yourself after establishing your base in one of them.

You can use a Lead to move an Ocelot, and get them where you want. Besides their utilities, Ocelots also look cool walking around a base. They have this unique wild vibe that not many Minecraft creatures have.

Why Your Ocelot Might Still Be Running Away

If an Ocelot keeps fleeing even after you’ve started feeding it, one of these is likely the cause:

  • You moved too fast.
    • Turning your camera quickly or stepping forward while within six blocks will scare off Ocelots.
  • You put the fish away.
    • Switching items or opening your inventory mid-approach resets the interaction.
  • Hostile mobs are nearby.
    • Zombies, skeletons, and other threats in the area can disrupt Ocelots.
  • You tried to corner it.
    • Ocelots don’t respond well to being trapped

Ocelots can still despawn if you wander too far from them. You can use a name tag on your Ocelot to prevent this. Named Ocelots won’t despawn. If you want to bring it home from the jungle, a lead is your best option since trusted ocelots don’t follow you on their own.
