Density adds damage to mace attacks in Minecraft when you strike enemies after falling. The further you drop before landing the hit, the more bonus damage you get.
Density is a strong Enchantment, but it’s not always the best option. We generally prefer using it while engaging in aerial combat, where we can land falling attacks. If you prefer staying close to the ground in fights, there might be better Enchantments out there compared to Density.
This guide explains how Density scales with fall distance, which situations make it valuable, and whether it belongs on your mace. You’ll know if it fits your combat style by the end.
What Does Density Do in Minecraft?

The Density Enhancement in Minecraft adds extra damage when you perform a smash attack after falling. The keyword here is “falling”, if you prefer fighting on the ground, Density won’t be any good for you.
Density’s bonus damage scales with fall distance, and you can’t put the Enhancement on swords, axes, or any other weapon other than Maces.
How Density Works on the Mace in Minecraft
Density amplifies the mace’s built-in mechanic in Minecraft, where falling attacks deal bonus damage. When you jump off a cliff and strike mid-air, or right after landing, you trigger a smash attack. Density multiplies the damage based on how many blocks you fell.
If you constantly find yourself in scenarios where you attack your enemies from towers or mountain ledges, Density will often be a solid pick for your mace.
Here’s how the damage boost scales per Density level:
| Enchantment Level | Bonus Damage per Block Fallen |
| Density One | +0.5 damage (¼ heart) |
| Density Two | +1 damage (½ heart) |
| Density Three | +1.5 damage (¾ heart) |
| Density Four | +2 damage (1 heart) |
| Density Five | +2.5 damage (1¼ hearts) |
What Is the Max Level of Density in Minecraft?
The maximum Density level is five in Minecraft. Each level increases the damage bonus by 0.5 per block fallen.
We recommend getting at least Density 3 if you’re using this enchantment. Anything below that feels underwhelming unless you’re dropping from extreme heights.
Incompatible Enchantments with Density in Minecraft
You cannot combine Density with four other mace enchantments:
- Breach (armor reduction)
- Smite (bonus damage to undead)
- Bane of Arthropods (bonus damage to spiders and silverfish)
- Sharpness (general melee damage increase)
If your mace already has one of these, you need to remove it with a Grindstone before applying Density. Commands can bypass this restriction in creative mode, but we don’t recommend it for normal gameplay.
Is Density Worth Using in Minecraft?
Density is worth using if you regularly land falling attacks.
Use Density in Minecraft if:
- You enjoy vertical combat
- You fight from cliffs, towers, or elevated structures
Skip Density in Minecraft if:
- Most of your fights happen on flat ground
- You prefer simple, grounded melee trading
Based on our gameplay experiences, we can say that Density shows its true worth when the map gives you natural height advantages. It underperforms in caves, flat biomes, and enclosed spaces.
Best Situations to Use Density in Minecraft

Density performs best in Minecraft’s uneven terrains, like mountains and hills. Additionally, player-built structures can also create opportunities for falling attacks.
Strong scenarios for Density:
- PvP on servers with vertical map design
- Fighting mobs from a height advantage
- Attacking from high ground
Density scales exponentially with the environment, so even Density 5 won’t help if you can’t get airborne. The most popular SMP servers on MineRank often feature vertical map designs where you can witness the true potential of Density.
When Density is Not the Best Choice in Minecraft

Density is not the best choice in Minecraft when you’re on low ground and can’t control fight positioning. If enemies rush you in tight corridors, you won’t have time to climb and drop.
It’s also weak against fast-moving targets. Landing a falling strike on sprinting players or teleporting endermen is difficult.
We see players force Density usage even when it doesn’t fit. Don’t do this. If the situation calls for flat-ground trading, use a different weapon or enchantment setup.
Weak scenarios for Density:
- Caves and mineshafts
- Underwater combat
Density vs Breach in Minecraft: Which Should You Choose?
We prefer Density over Breach in Minecraft due to its PvE and survival advantages. It helps drastically with clearing stacked mobs, but it’s a rather close call between the two Enchantments.
Choose Density if you’re building around aerial combat and want the highest possible burst damage. Choose Breach if you want reliable performance regardless of where the fight happens.
If you’re unfamiliar with aerial combat in Minecraft, Breach will be the more reliable option.
| Enchantment | Strengths | Activation | Best Use Case |
| Density | Maximum damage potential | Requires falling attacks to activate | One-shot builds |
| Breach | Reduces enemy armor effectiveness | Works on any terrain | Extended fights |
Best Enchantments to Combine with Density
Density works best with enchantments that support aerial combat.
Some of the best Enchantments to combine with Density are:
- Wind Burst: Launches you upward after a smash attack
- Mending: Keeps your mace functional
- Fire Aspect: Adds burn damage
Remember: you cannot add Breach, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, or Sharpness alongside Density.
How to Get Density in Minecraft

You can obtain Density in Minecraft through four methods:
- Enchanting Table: Place your mace with Lapis Lazuli at an enchanting table. Surround the table with 15 bookshelves for maximum enchantment levels.
- Enchanted Books: Found in loot chests across multiple structures. Trial Chambers have one of the highest drop rates for Density.
- Librarian Villagers: Trade with librarians who may offer a Density Enchantment Book.
- Fishing: You can technically catch Enchanted Books while fishing, but the odds are very low.
We recommend the enchanting table method if you have XP to spare. For guaranteed results, farm Trial Chambers or trade with multiple librarians.
How to Put Density on a Mace in Minecraft

You need to use an Anvil to put Density on a Mace in Minecraft. Place the mace in the first slot and the enchanted book in the second slot.
This process costs XP based on the Enchantment level.
How Rare Is Density 5 in Minecraft?
Density Five in Minecraft is quite rare, even with an optimized enchanting setup.
You need 15 bookshelves around your enchanting table to unlock level 30 enchantments. Even then, the RNG can give you different enchantments or lower Density levels.
Tips to improve your chances of getting Density 5 in Minecraft:
- Build an XP farm so you can enchant repeatedly
- Farm in areas where you have a better chance of getting Density
- Frequently trade with Librarian Villagers
Density: Good, But Not for Everyone
Here’s everything you need to remember about Density in Minecraft:
The Core Mechanics of Density:
- Density adds damage based on fall distance before you strike
- It only activates on mace smash attacks
- The maximum level is Density V (+2.5 damage per block fallen)
When It’s Worth Using:
- You regularly attack from elevated positions
- Your server or world has vertical terrain
- You want maximum burst damage from above
When to Skip It:
- Most fights happen on flat ground
- You prefer straightforward melee combat
Density rewards creative positioning and aggressive vertical play. If that matches how you fight, it’s one of the strongest damage enchantments in Minecraft.
If you’d like to test Density in real combat scenarios, you can do so in the top PvP and Survival servers on MineRank.
FAQs about Density in Minecraft
Does having more than 15 bookshelves help in Minecraft?
No, bookshelves past 15 don’t help in vanilla Minecraft. There is no enchantment higher than level 30, which requires 15 bookshelves when placed correctly around the enchanting table. Some modded servers increase bookshelf capacity to 24 to improve enchanting chances, but this does not apply here.
Is Density 5 good in Minecraft?
Density 5 is excellent if you like aerial combat. At the maximum level, you gain +2.5 damage per fallen block.
What is better, Density or Breach in Minecraft?
Density is better for aerial combat, while Breach is better for lower ground battles. We run Density on vertically built servers and Breach for general survival content. Pick based on whether your fights involve height advantages or flat-ground engagements.
What enchantments are incompatible with Density?
Density cannot be paired with Breach, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, or Sharpness due to how Minecraft handles damage enchantments. You cannot pair two damage-increasing
enchantments on the same weapon. Use a Grindstone to remove the unwanted enchantment.
What enchantments should you combine with Density?
Wind Burst III is the best enchantment to pair with Density. It knocks you into the air after you smash something, allowing you to hit them multiple times. Fire Aspect II gives you some extra damage over time on your already high damage. Mending will help your mace last longer in combat.
